I assume diagonally. It looks better, and it helps to keep grass from getting all over the sidewalk.

Two laps around the perimeter, then longways.

I don't have sidewalks so it is parallel with the road

90 degrees of whatever was done last. Or you can go in continuous laps - sort of like a spiral ending up in the center of the lawn.

I mow just before it rains! Then the grass gets washed away

They have grass in AZ?

But yes, I do the perimeter first, blowing the grass inwards of course.

I put on a poncho and hat so the neighbors think we can afford to pay a landscaper. When I'm done, I eat my lunch under a tree.

Large lawn with rounded interfaces with items and woods: usually concentric paths with a jug-handle turn on corners too small to take with the machine (standard format rider). No sidewalk worries, and too much irregular area to try to plumb in straight lines. Also, generally at a long enough interval that concentric direction is determined by the mower chute side - discharge to outside, though if short enough, discharge to inside for better mulching.

I don't have a lawn to mow... And neither do my parents, closest thing we have back home is a somewhat large patch of land that's actually part of a natural reserve, so no mowing the lawn or chopping down trees or anything. We get to clean it up and maintain it clean though, and that includes chopping wood from fallen trees to use on the winter, putting up fences and keeping the drug/drunk people out.

Mow around the outside and work my way in. It's like a racetrack that changes a little bit every time

I don't like the spiral method. It doesn't distribute the clippings easily, and thus, the lawn is more likely to require bagging. Bagging sucks eggs.

My parents do. If I get a house in AZ, it'll be all rock, maybe some astroturf; grass is way too much work.

Like a baws.

Sometimes it rains every day for a few days around the weekly mow schedule, and I have to just pick a time when it's not raining but the grass is still damp. And then I die.

You're lucky. That little strip between the sidewalk and the road is a pain in the neck.

And then the mower gets stuck and shuts off all the time because the grass is wet! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!

And what's this with the clippings? Our mower has a bag attached to it and all the grass goes into the bag.

If I bagged the whole lawn, all the grass wouldn't fit in the yard waste can. Sometimes, though, if the grass is really long, I'll go back over with a bag and suck up the excess.

This is my parent's lawn as well. I WILL LEARN FROM THEIR HOME BUYING MISTAKES.

When I lived outside California, whatever suited my fancy.

My place in California doesn't have a lawn, but if I did, everyone just hires Mexicans. Oddly, haven't met an El Salvadorian mowing lawns.

We used to have this really old mower. It wasn't even self-propelled, but it chopped up grass like some kind of angry samurai with a sharpened katana.

But my parents got rid of it last year FOR NO REASON. I can't wait to move out.

I assume there's some Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, etc. in the lawn care industry. Not all the southern Central American immigrants are in the drug business, right?

My son will be 11 in March, so I think it's beyond time to pass the tradition down and get him to mow the lawn once a week. It ain't hard, the front yard is just a simple back & forth to the street, and the back yard is fairly straight forward. He doesn't even have to bag it, or anything.

My son, also 11, wants to save money to buy his own iPod. I offered him $10 to mow and edge the front yard, also a simple rectangle. Takes me about 20 minutes. He refused the offer. He's going to be surprised when I tell him he HAS to do it, for nothing. My offer has expired.

I started when I was nine and as the oldest really had to untiljust recently when I moved out. My brother (6 years my younger) would complain when I told him to mow. My response was "I did this for over ten years so now that its your turn shut up and do it. Ill trim."

I do it differently every time. Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, sometime in circles. Keeps it interesting.

I also follow the procedure: edge, blow, mow, blow

Haha I have the least OPPO mower ever, a fiskars reel mower. Usually it's a mix of perimeter then either horizontal or vertical, sometimes diagonal or continued perimeter until I reach the center.
